Sermon Roundtable – A Unique Form of Bible Study
Leader: Steve Hancock
Mondays, Noon in the Library
Participants in this unique form of Bible study will study the Bible by reflecting on the biblical text that is being preached in worship the following Sunday. Steve Hancock leads the discussion, and each week provides background material about the historical context of the passage, definitions of key words, authorship, and other information that will be helpful in interpreting the text. The class will then be invited to interact with the author of the text, discuss such questions as, “What does the author seem to be saying?†and “What do I want to say in response?†Class members are asked to identify important ideas or themes that are prominent as they reflect on the biblical text in relation to their own lives, the church, and the world around them. The following Sunday in worship, they have the opportunity to hear the sermon preached that they helped to create.
First and Third Monday Morning Bible Study for Women
Leaders: Jeannie Ford & Lindy Vogado
9:30 – 11:00 a.m., Second Hall
If gratitude is good, why is it so hard to do? In her book Grateful, Diana Butler Bass invites readers to understand new dimensions of American spirituality. Although most of us know that gratitude is good—and good for us—there is a gap between our desire to be grateful and our ability to behave gratefully. Implications of the gap affect both our personal and public lives. Bass weaves together social science research, spiritual wisdom, and contemporary issues as she calls for a richer understanding and practice of gratitude. Join this eclectic group of women as we explore insights about the power of thankful living to change how we treat one another, and how we might transform our world. The Bible study meets 9:30-11:00 a.m. in Second Hall. Books will be available in the church office for $12.00
